At certain points of your business, plug-and-play templates can be (and even should be) an essential part of your brand strategy. Controversial for someone like me to say? Probably! But I think it’s unreasonable for designers, marketers and the like to expect a lot of new businesses to invest heavily, early on, in things like website design.

Templates can save you time and money at a time in your business when you’re in short supply of either or both. As long as you put your own branding spin on them, using your own colours, fonts and photos, templates can be the kick-start your business needs to gain some momentum.

So no, I don’t think website templates are bad.

But I still firmly believe in the power of custom design.
